About the Author
The silly and sleepless Mistress McCutchan, otherwise known in the real world simply as Laura, created Morbid Outlook in August of 1992, while still a gothling in high school.

She is a freelance web designer, but also makes time to also design and make all sorts of stuff, DJ, dance as one-half of Serpentina as well as direct her Toronto-based troupe, The Serpentina North Ensemble. She is vegan, but not one of the pushy ones. When not working like a maniac, she can be found becoming one with the couch, especially if Three’s Company is on.

Fashion Survey 2001
Mistress McCutchan
After paging through the fashion survey from 2000, I figured what better way to update than give a new survey and compare answers? An e-mail was sent to the subscribers of the Morbid Outlook e-list and shortly after, dozens and dozens of replies filled with interesting answers came back. Many thanks to those of you who took the time!
This year, 58% of the participants in our fashion survey were female compared to last year’s 61%.
Our audience is older this year! The majority of you shared with us that you were in the 25-30 age group. The second largest group of folks who replied were in the 31-35 group (which I mysteriously omitted. Must have been subliminally trying to make everyone younger.)
Black is the primo choice of colour (of course), followed by some jewel tone colours like burgundy, sapphire blue, violet and emerald green. A few folks mentioned pink too.
51% opt for velvet fabric. Second and third choices included silk and leather. Last year, this was strictly a velvet and vinyl crowd. One gal shared her disgust for PVC in that “it’s overkill. Everyone and their dog wears it these days!”
When asked what your favourite clothing stores were, second hand, thrift shops and the local army/navy store reigned supreme. Others also mentioned they prefer making their own clothes. Last year, various stores were singled out like Religious Sex, Lip Service, Cruella, Hot Topic and Patricia Field.
60% declared they did not have a favourite online shopping source. Those who did mention their favourites included Ebay, Hot Topic – “because it’s just so cheap!”, Underbelly, Velvet Garden and Azrael’s Accomplice.
Many respondents (over 70%) did not site a most stylish male or female celebrity. Although the survey of 2000 sited David Bowie and a variety of fashionable femmes, one reader clearly put it, “Compared to the streetwear you see everyday, most celebrities have a very boring sense of style!”
The few answers that did include responses for a most stylish male celeb voted William Faith and David Bowie. The fashionable female celebrity was Winona Ryder (circa her early 90’s vintage wear) and Angelina Jolie.
The top favourite in cosmetics was Mac, followed by Lancome, Ben Nye, Anna Sui and Urban Decay. The men are a lot less fussy about their make-up. As one guy responded, “Any decent eyeliner will do.”
The favourite choice in footwear for women were Transmuters, Fluevogs, Doc Martens or “anything high”. Men stuck with their Docs, New Rocks, or sneakers.
30% of participants claimed they have no favourite designers. Others’ answers ranged from small, independent designers like Rose Mortem and Atrocities to Jean-Paul Gaultier, Issey Miyake, Vivian Westwood and Betsey Johnson.
None of the men surveyed own a corset. 54% of the women own at least one.
Asking what our readers’ most neccessary accessory garnered a variety of answers, but the definitive reply was “my rapier wit!”
Most people sited as their favourite jewelry is their ring or rings! 22% really like vintage jewelry too.
This crowd likely to spend $200 on either boots, a corset or toys.
And my favourite question, which provoked various answers both serious and funny: “I never leave the house without... my keys, my purse, clean underwear/clothes on, sun block and make-up on.”
