About the Author
The silly and sleepless Mistress McCutchan, otherwise known in the real world simply as Laura, created Morbid Outlook in August of 1992, while still a gothling in high school.

She is a freelance web designer, but also makes time to also design and make all sorts of stuff, DJ, dance as one-half of Serpentina as well as direct her Toronto-based troupe, The Serpentina North Ensemble. She is vegan, but not one of the pushy ones. When not working like a maniac, she can be found becoming one with the couch, especially if Three’s Company is on.

Another reason to love Canada: the cyberstyle of Plastik Wrap. Considering Toronto is such a wonderfully multi-cultural and modern city, it makes perfect sense that it would be the creative birthplace for these designers. Adriana Fulop and Ryan Webber are the dynamic duo behind operations of this fashion company.
Adriana’s design background stems from her fashion history studies at the University of Art in Bratislava; Ryan’s education is in web and video design. He remarks, “I was enrolled in the multimedia program at Vancouver film school in the mid 90’s in class 13 and worked in the new media industry for years. I also enrolled in BC college with plans to finish their fashion design program. I took sewing and drafting among other classes but dropped out of the program due to both dislike of the teaching structure and economic issues.” This combination makes for some very inspired, futuristic fashion. Both work hard at designing for both genders keeping the Plastik Wrap line well coordinated.
Their biggest inspiration comes from music. “We generally try not to be to immersed in the media, but I suppose you can’t help but be influenced by all of your surroundings/experiences.” Ryan admits.
Why “Plastik Wrap”? The name comes from a Photoshop filter. “The name came together after messing with names for a very long time... and while we played with names, I typed them into Photoshop and looked at them on screen in different fonts trying to get a feeling for them.” Ryan tells us. “It happens that the version of Photoshop I was using had a new plugin called ’plastic wrap’ and almost as a joke I mentioned that as a possible name. Adriana instantly saw potential, so we started playing with it.” The “k” was added in as a nod to Adriana’s native Slovakia.
Business began in March 2001 and has boldly made its mark on the fashion scene. Plastik Wrap is a full-time gig for these designers, “and then some,” Ryan tells us. “I am responsible for many things. Anything electronic falls into my domain, as well as, many of the day to day jobs. Of course the real joy is designing.” The Plastik Wrap team is made up of in-studio part-time contractors and local manufacturers. “This gives us a great deal of expertise in a very convenient manner.”
Their latest piece, a sheer shrug named Exo, is just another exquisite offering that flows with the flavour of their collections. We wish them the best and look forward to watching them grow. Do take the time to check out www.plastikwrap.com.
