Book Review: Gargoyle Tears
Andrew Fenner
Though my better
literary instincts caused me to balk at several places in this novelette, I found it overall to be an enjoyable diversion. Fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Sabrina, Teenage Witch and teen horror flicks such as Scream or The Coven are going to love this book. My problems with it stemmed mostly from whole sections that seemed unfinished or simply left out. This broke the flow of the tale, and also left a lot of loose ends flying around where they didnt need to be. The unfinished parts felt rushed, as if they were glossed over with the authors intending to return later for polishing and fleshing out; but they either lacked the time or didnt proofread (a few rather obvious misspellings add to this latter impression). I believe the copy I read may have been a preview version, so these shortcomings may have already been dealt with as far as I know.
One of the more enjoyable aspects of the story is the whole gargoyle mythos the authors create. The critters come off something like friendly vampires, shape shifting near immortals who can and do spend a lot of time living as human beings. They are cute too as well as awe inspiring. I now want one for a roommate. The love angle between several of the major characters is also very sweet and nicely drawn, not as one dimensional as one typically finds in the aforementioned genre films. Perhaps this is because it is easier to get into the emotional and mental guts of the characters in a book than it is in a film. In movies, the creator can, for the most part, only show the participants in action, while written media allows the author a number of alternate perspectives and methods of informing the reader.
Add to these characters and the gargoyles a somewhat generic serial murder mystery with supernatural overtones, all perhaps a little too neatly wrapped up at the end, and you have a book that is as enjoyable as an evening at the movies viewing something like Scream or Heathers. This book would make a good movie of that ilk. I would watch it at any rate.
