The Well-Read Goth
Mistress McCutchan
What does
a cultured, awkward intellectual goth read? When we polled our readers for the top picks in their essential reading, we compiled a variety of choice titles for your reading pleasure. They were tough to categorize, but we found these to be fitting in to the tastes of Morbid Outlook crowd.
The Classics
The Picture of Dorian Gray
The classic Oscar Wilde novel, and, in my opinion, this read goes well with a steady listening of The Smiths.
Anna Karenina
19th century love and adultery, Russian style; considered to be Tolstoys finest.
Two other obvious classics are Mary Shelleys Frankenstein and Bram Stokers Dracula, although a few readers who participated in this survey stated that the novel Dracula is highly overrated.
Cyberpunk
Neuromancer
The William Gibson novel that defines the cyberpunk genre.
Snow Crash
In the Metaverse, is Snow Crash a computer virus, a disease, or a drug?
Comics/Graphic Novels
Maruo jigoku
Too dark to be called manga one of our readers said of the eroto-grotesque work of Suehiro Maruo.
Smut!
Fetish
Photography book edited by Tony Mitchell.
As Dark As They Come
Hex Files
Mick Mercers brilliant scene-survey.
Amphigorey
The darkly delightful collection of Edward Goreys work.
Silk
The modern gothic horror debut from Caitlin Kiernan.
Stalking Tender Prey
One reader shared, one of my favourite writers is Storm Constantine and this dark fantasy from the Grigori Trilogy came highly recommended.
Exquisite Corpse
Poppy Zs finest novel, chock full of murder, cannibalism, and love in New Orleans.
Adulterers Anonymous
The first collection of work written by Lydia Lunch and Exene Cervenka, before their spoken word stuff.
