About the Author
The silly and sleepless Mistress McCutchan, otherwise known in the real world simply as Laura, created Morbid Outlook in August of 1992, while still a gothling in high school.

She is a full-time, senior web designer, DJ, and director of The Serpentina North Ensemble. She is vegan, but not one of the pushy ones. When not on the road or working like a maniac, she can be found becoming one with the couch, especially if Three’s Company is on.

Readers’ Music Survey Results
Mistress McCutchan
The results are in! Here’s what our readers had to say when asked.
Do you collect vinyl?
Nearly 25% of our readers say yes. Out of that number, some say they may not neccessarily go out of their way to collect, but have a fair number of record albums.
Where do you tend to purchase music?
44% tend to go with shopping at their local music shop, and another 16% admitted they make a dash towards the used bin. 21% shop at big chains, like HMV, Tower, or Best Buy. 11% like shopping online and buying from Projekt, Middle Pillar, or Amazon.
What is the last cd you’ve bought?
The answers here were incredibly diverse. They included Apoptygma Berzerk – Welcome To Earth, Voltaire – Boo Hoo, David Bowie – Earthling, and Otto’s Daughter – Renew.
Name the one album you are dying to get next.
Our readers based their answers either what they need to buy after listening to some mp3’s or what they are saving their pennies for. Choices included Rasputina’s How We Quit The Forest, Android Lust’s The Dividing, and Collide’s Chasing the Ghost.
Your favourite band of all time?
The overwhelming response here (over 60% of those surveyed!) was The Cure, but other bands/musicians mentioned as an all-time favourite included The Damned, Depeche Mode, Dead Can Dance, David Bowie, Tool, Portishead, and Marilyn Manson.
Most influential musician(s)?
Our readers put David Bowie at the top of the list here. Other answers included John Cale, Jim Morrison, They Might Be Giants, Prince, Tori Amos and Bjork.
What is the most goth album you own?
Was this a trick question? Well, our readers explained the gothest of their goth albums are Switchblade Symphony’s Serpentine Gallery, Christian Death’s Only Theatre of Pain, The Sisters of Mercy’s First and Last and Always, The Damned’s Phantasmagoria, Joy Division’s Closer, and Bauhaus’ In The Flat Field. When weighing these in, there’s no contest.
Most out of place album in your collection?
This was an interesting category to sort through! Our readers “oddball” albums ranged from Leonard Cohen to Def Leppard. Other oddities that were admitted with a tinge of embarassment included Insane Clown Posse, Deicide, Joan Osbourne, and Prince, although I will also admit, listening to Prince’s Purple Rain is a wonderful “guilty pleasure” and perhaps really nothing to be embarassed to listen to!
Do you use the Internet to get music? Where do you download your mp3’s?
50% of those surveyed answered yes and tend to use WinMX, Kazaa, or mp3.com. 12% rarely use the Internet for downloading music, and the other 38% do not download since the death of Audiogalaxy or simply because “the quality of digital music sucks.”
What song can you never get out of your head?
Tons of new wave songs were listed here, like “The Safety Dance” or “Never Say Never”. Other choices included Christian Death – Romeo’s Distress, Front 242 – Headhunter, and Ministry – Everyday is Halloween.
