About the Author
Mick Mercer has always annoyed. He says what he thinks, which causes problems in the Goth scene, and dismisses talk of bias, which some people claim, because when he does a book he concentrates on who is doing most at the time. He doesnt take sides and doesnt piss about. His new book is the fourth, after Black Book, Gothic Rock and Hex Files, and will hopefully be followed by many more. He hates snobs, always try and encourage new people into the scene, and want to cover it as an international entity, even though some people prefer a cosier view. He is difficult, dedicated and dozy, in equal measure.

Gitane Demone Retrospective
Mick Mercer
Gitane Demone is commonly recognized as a former member of Christian Death, but her star shines much brighter than her goth rock pedigree. She left Christian Death in 1989 to pursue a solo career. Her albums span from rock to jazzy cabaret to ubersexy fetish, and her performances are incredibly energetic and passionate.
The posed (as opposed to live performance) shots were done for a UK independent music mag called Siren. The publishers were the people who did my Gothic Rock book so they didnt mind us sneaking loads of Goth bits in. Gitane came fully prepared for the shoot with her outfits worked out. She, thankfully, left her handcuffs in her handbag, but when she left my flat I found two water-filled silver balloons dwindling in my bath.
The caretaker, who had found us on the roof doing the outdoor shots, didnt
speak to me for weeks.
These particular photos were taken between 1991 and 1993.
