The Living Jarboe, NYC and Philadelphia 2003
Bryan Walsh
During the summer of 2003, Jarboe toured with the Italian
band, Larsen, in support of their recent Krzykognia (Screaming Fire) DVD release, which features their performance from St. Johns Church in
Gdansk, Poland, on March 9th, 2003. On August 20th both bands performed
at Sin-E in New York City. It was my first time at Sin-E, as well as the first time I ever saw Jarboe perform live. I thought the club overall was one of the nicer venues out there. Larsen was already performing when I arrived and it was clear that these musicians have a lot in common with people that have performed with Jarboe in the past, whether it includes other former band members from her days with the Swans or musicians that participated in her solo releases.
Afterwards, Jarboe took the stage, and many of the songs she performed I recognized from Disburden Disciple, an album that has caught the attention of quite a few people who have heard me play it over the air on the radio. Her live performance from that night sounded just as good as the music recorded in studio on her releases.
The next day, Jarboe and Larsen performed at a Unitarian church in
Philadelphia. Although ceiling fans were on, the place was still hot and
stuffy. If the heat affected Jarboe and the other musicians there was no
indication because they sounded just as good as they did at Sin-E the
previous night.
Here are some photos from both performances. More information on Jarboe can be found at her official website.
