Zia and Unto Ashes at Downtime, NYC
Bryan Walsh
First up for the night was Zia, who were performing their very last show
before they disbanded. Elaine is moving to another area where shell
continue her cosmic music. Liz will be performing solo with her piano and
vocal performances in New York City, and Matt will continue to perform
with Space Robot Scientists and continue with his acting career. I was
hearing a lot of their songs for the first time that night and Im certain
other audience members were hearing a lot of their songs for the first
time as well, which makes the band break-up all the more unfortunate.
Zias performance on stage was very lively and energetic, with Elaine and
Liz alternating as lead vocalist. The music itself was good enough to
lead me to wonder why other DJs have not been spinning their music more
often.
Up next was Unto Ashes. Ericah Hagle did not perform with the band this evening; a guest musician performed the violin, tambourine, bells
and vocals. Most of the songs performed for this night were from Empty
Into White, one of my favorite albums released this year. The songs that
appear on Empty Into White carry a lot of power and at times seem
deliberately designed in how they were written and performed to strike an
unconscious chord in the listener. The power behind these songs only
added to the bands live performance for this night.
Here are photos of both bandsā performances for this night. More
information on Unto Ashes can be found at their official website and more information on Zia can be found at their website.
