Saint Eve at Plaid, NYC
Bryan Walsh
April 28, 2004
Before this show, I was still new to St. Eve’s music; I had only seen Gabrielle perform three songs without her band in Philadelphia. Tonight she was performing a full set with the band, including Kerry Smith of Anathema Device on bass. St. Eve was scheduled to play at midnight, but it seemed as though one of the other bands was running late on stage.
Finally after the other band left the stage, St. Eve set up. Unfortunately as they were getting ready, the projector for the show wasn’t working correctly and the band encountered a few more technical difficulties. Gabrielle commented onstage “Mercury is retrograde,” and it was starting to show. Once the band began performing, they sounded like a powerhouse. It may take talent to sound as good as they did, but to do it during a Mercury retrograde takes a lot of class. Afterwards I finally picked up a copy of the album, Elixir. It’s a nice solid album where each song is of very good quality and contains no filler tracks whatsoever. The music definitely has crossover appeal for both electronic music fans and goths alike.
