Ten Questions with Falling You
Mistress McCutchan
I really enjoy music, but it doesnt necessarily mean I want to read about it. If you think band interviews/reviews are a tedious read, try writing one! I thought it would be much more interesting to gain insight on the people behind the music with just ten little questions, straight from the artists to you...
1) Chocolate or vanilla?
Definitely vanilla, but not just any vanilla it needs to be Breyers Natural Vanilla, with those funky little dark spots in it. Those dark spots were put there, im sure of it, by the Flavor Fairies; they buzz all around, making things taste good. Theyve buzzed a lot around Breyers Natural Vanilla :-)
2) Do you have any pets and what are they?
Ive my floppy-eared best friend, Pugsley! Hes the coolest pooch on the planet, I cant say enough about him. Hes about 75-80 lbs, and his mother was a wolf, but his father was a woof-woof pant-pant farm dog, so while Pugsley has a lot of the wolf markings, hes also got the floppy ears and the big brown eyes that just make him all the more cool (like the best of both worlds, me thinks). I love him like mad ...
3) Favourite place to visit?
Ive lots of these, but recently ive grown quite attached to the redwood parks around here. There is nothing quite like being in the presence of something that was born before the Declaration of Independence was written, standing hundreds of feet tall and as wide as a small house. These trees are magnificent things, they manage to remove nearly all of the sadness and despair a soul could be harboring, replacing it with reverence and awe. They are truly, truly beautiful and majestic beings, they really help put things in perspective for me.
The only thing is, they are a dying breed. Less than 3% of the California coastal redwoods remain. This is the only sadness they cannot remove.
4) Favourite article of clothing?
Oh, I dunno basic black t-shirts and jeans, nothing special the more worn in the better.
5) Favourite piece of art?
Oh, this is a good one! Ive several favorite pieces, some of them are
Visual: Lucas Cranach the Elders Melancholy: An Allegory circa 1531. Ever since I discovered this painting ive had a great affinity towards it it is a beautiful, poignant, reflective and very moody work; if any visual piece can come close to how I often feel, this would be it. It celebrates innocence without ignoring the blood on our hands, it is at once despairing and hopeful. It is simply gorgeous ... unfortunately, ive no print or anything of it, save as the cover of a book I have. Im looking, though ...
Aural: Tetsu Inoues Waterloo Terminal circa 2000 I think :-) This CD is one of my all-time favorites gorgeous abstract noise music. A close runner up would be Black Tape for a Blue Girls As One Aflame ... CD, which moved me to tears, no kidding, as well as Lycias Cold. All of these CDs are masterworks, in my opinion.
Written: This would be a tie between John Miltons Paradise Lost, Paradise Regained and Yasunari Kawabatas Beauty and Sadness. Both of these works chronicle the subtle differences between love and hate, passion and obsession, coward and king. They are both uplifting at times and unbelievably sad at others, and both works make you feel for the hero / heroine as well as the villain / nemesis, at times making you wonder which is which, really.
6) If you were a cartoon character, who would you be?
Lots of them! The sarcastic side of me would be Daffy Duck, the devious side of me would be Wil E. Coyote, and the way-too-friendly-it-almost-makes-you-sick side of me would be Casper :-)
7) What are you most likely to be doing at 3 am?
Throwing in the towel and getting up. Im a bit of an insomniac, and its not uncommon at all for me to be wide-eyed at 3am, staring out the window at the moon through the trees. Im usually back in bed by 5am though.
8) Age you lost your virginity?
In many ways im still quite inexperienced when it comes to this, but I remember a particularly eventful night in 1991 in the middle of Texas. To this day, Bela Flecks first album always brings back, erm, interesting memories :-) Looking back, it occurs to me that she was very, very lonely, and I doubt I was there for her in the way she really needed someone to be there for her. It was so strange, I didnt know what to think.
I dont even know her name. She never gave it to me. To this day I dont understand how someone that needed to be touched so badly could be so secretive. The innocent in me asks if the world is full of people like this. The wiser-yet-sadder part of me knows the answer already.
9) What piece of advice would you give to a teenager?
Believe it or not, ive thought about this a lot. I dont know if they would listen, but I would tell them that we did the best we could, as our parents did. We made mistakes, as our parents did, as you will, too. I would ask them to remember this when its their turn to guide the world, and to always look out for the children and the innocent. I would tell them that expression, creativity, people coloring their environment with the magic that fills their hearts and minds, is one of the best things you can do, that each brush stroke, each written word, each voice and sound you make, makes the world a better place. I would tell them that its ok to laugh and to cry ...and I would tell them that it doesnt need to be so bad. I would tell them how important, how vitally important they are.
10) What are you most proud of to date?
(long pause) ... I dont know.
The new Falling You album will be available soon. In the meantime, you can hear Falling You at their mp3 page.
